Finally. The TV version of The Beauty Inside delved into what the film could not: a gay relationship. In the case of the Korean drama, it turned out to be the male version of a homosexual relationship, since it's the female lead who could change into different people.
The Beauty Inside director Song Hyun Wook wisely made it more palatable for the generally conservative Korean taste by choosing boyish looking actor Kim Min Suk (김민석), who took the edge of what could be sexually charged scenes. His compact build and idol pretty face meshed nicely with Lee Min Ki's (이민기) more mature look.
And, with Kim Min Suk's impeccable comic timing and subtle effeminate affectations, their scenes together became funny, touching and even romantic.
In addition, The Beauty Inside director made sure to intersperse the male scenes with cuts to Kim Min Suk's female counterpart Seo Hyun Jin, reminding the audiences that the scenes are actually between the male and female leads. As a result, I think The Beauty Inside TV audiences could more readily accept the "gay" male scenes.
I'm looking forward to more subversive concepts from director Song Hyun Wook in future episodes of The Beauty Inside, as the romantic fantasy has found a quirky way to poke conservative notions.
