How the Philippines is Portrayed in Korean Dramas

Fox Bride Star writers must be credited with having created a Filipino character that figured prominently in a Korean drama story arc. In episodes 7-8 of the SBS drama, Filipino actor Ejay Falcon portrayed a Filipino who was denied entry into Korea due to an illegally obtained passport.

Although his character, Ian Santos, was very sympathetic in the sense that his illicit efforts were largely due to his desire to see his wife and recently born child, one cannot deny the fact that Filipinos and the Philippines in general have an unlawful image in Korean dramas.

In other dramas, the Philippines has often been mentioned as a hideout of Korean miscreants who needed to escape from the law.

On the other hand, the Philippines has also been mentioned as a place with a low cost of living and, consequently, the current trend of a number of Koreans who have taken advantage of that fact by having their families based in the Philippines while they continue to work in their home country. Moreover, it's also acknowledged that the Philippines is a cheaper alternative than the US when studying English.
